MDMA Therapy: The Surprising Reason Why Dose Matters
How to prevent the bliss bubble from bursting.
Dance music blasting. Technicolored laser lights flickering. Bodies mingling. Sweat dripping. A few hundred pairs of bright eyes dilating and jaws gurning in a basement club, infused with the sinus-tingling aromas of Vicks VapoRub and Red Bull. That was the setting, in the late eighties, in which I first “came up” on a dose of MDMA.
After the initial overwhelm subsided, the expansive, ecstatic connection to everyone and everything emerged. My internal commentary “Wow! What an incredible feeling ….” acknowledging how unlike anything it was that I’d ever tasted before: a doorway to omnipresence that years of buckled-up Sunday morning sermons, inside a quaint Christian church nestled in a tiny English village, had failed to deliver.
Rather than the polite hand-shakes and head-nods of the reserved congregation, beaming smiles, all-knowing winks and gigantic “feel like I’ve known you forever” hugs, and high-fives, abounded. This was it. The unity preached by the grey, dandruff-dusted vicar, no longer a concept achievable via some kind of miracle. This was real.
